Getting into Katatedori

Most of us that have been taking Aikido have run into a situation where we have to expain how we arrive at a point where we can execute a certain technique. Since Aikido has no offensive techniques, we are forced to do all of our techniques as a result of a defense for an attack. I have been asked coutless times why I think someone is going to grab my wrist out in "The Real World."

Well, the other night, I had the pleasure of attending a class that demonstrated how one might find themselves in a wrist grabbing situation. The demonstration delt with the defender throwing a punch to the eventual attackers mid section. The eventual Uke would then block the punch outside of the body and transfer the punch to a katatedori attack. Nage would then do any given technique from the Katatedori postion. - Wrist grab for those that do not know.

I found this to be an incredibally satisfying way of getting into an Aikido like situation, from a real world perspective.

  • In hapkido we are taught to just put the muthafucker in technique, that is do not wait for them to attack you. Attack them and put your knee on their neck and punch them in the face so they will quit giving you shit. Try it sometime, stand in pango ja se (that is just like your jap stance) against somebody and just put em in kotaguyesh (i know that is spelled incorrectly). It is always better when the attacker wins, because the attacker has (a)the sense of mind to attack (b) is not nervous about them trying their punk aikido tech. on them and (c) is not a pink panty wearing punk like tom.

  • I think that it is not so much about attacking first, it is about responding in the approprite fashion. I think Aikido gives you the option to disarm a situation, but it does not give you the option of incapacitating your opponent, unless the correct atemi is used. This is where study in other martial artforms comes in handy. It reminds me of your old Aikido teacher Sac, he would not give out a black belt until the person had received a blackbelt rank in another form of Martial Art. Although, if you can manage to get to a point in Aikdido, where you are proficient in many techniques, a bit of force can make the technique go from effective, to devistating. Saotme Sensei is alway preaching about taking Aikido with a martial attitude.

  • about the "grabbing the wrist" thing...

Our Sensei's are always tell us the person is grabbing your wrist to keep you from hitting them. However, if Aikido is passive (still having a martial attitude, of course) why would we be hitting anyone ?

I, personally, enjoy doing techniques from a Shomenuchi, Yokemenuchi or Munetski attack. Seems more realistic. *shrugs*

  • "if aikido is passive (while still having a martial attitude of course"

this is exactly why aikido dosent make any goddamn sense to me, for one to have a martial attitude dont they have to be active. Anyway it is all about the brutality that is putting your knee on their neck and punching them in the face. Otherwise they might get up and try to fuck with you again. It is easier to kill/maim somebody who is fucking with you, then you dont have to sweat them fucking with you anymore.

  • but how cool would it be to keep getting the person on the ground, in a graceful manner, putting them in a lock, then letting go.
It's like the wise old guy in kung-fu movies. He doesn't want to kill you, he's just showing you over & over that if you continue to fuck with him, he'll continue to make you look like an ass... but still let you live.

  • I would rather just make them die, and not have to sweat it anymore. It takes less time and energy, and I am all about bieng efficient.
